A Passing of the Torch

While it may not be the Olympic torch, a torch just as important for St. Vrain Valley people in need is being passed.  For over 30 years, the Holiday Basket Program (later renamed the Holiday Giving program) has helped children whose families are in need of food, clothing and gifts during the holidays, as well as homebound elders and individual adults and couples with these needs.  It has been a wonderful program and has reached thousands in need over the years due to the generosity of many community volunteers and donors.

The St. Vrain Community Council extends a heartfelt thank you to all who have supported this program over the years. We thank the thousands of volunteers who gave so generously of their time, year after year. And we thank the many donors and individuals that provided financial support. Without the combined efforts of volunteers and donors, this program would not have been possible.

After overseeing this program for many years, the members of the St. Vrain Community Council voted that it was time to pass this program on to a new organization. This means the St. Vrain Community Council will no longer run the Holiday Giving Program.  Knowing that this program has been so vital to the community, they searched to find an interested and qualified organization to start a new but similar program in its place.

LifeBridge Christian Church has decided to create the Kindness for Kids program that will begin in 2009.  The St. Vrain Community Council will give all remaining related materials to this new group. While final details have not been completed, it is satisfying to know that another group will be running with the torch.  With their leadership, Longmont and the surrounding communities will continue helping those in need during the holiday season that, without the kindness of others, would have much less joy at the holidays.

Be on the lookout for opportunities to volunteer and to take part in this exciting new program. For more information about the Kindness for Kids program, please contact Lisa Duran, Community Involvement Coordinator, LifeBridge Christian Church at 303.776.2927 or visit
